The health and wellness of our community is our highest priority. In light of the recent coronavirus (COVID-19) throughout our country and out of an abundance of caution, we are cancelling non-essential events through the month of April. Upcoming events that are now canceled include: Tom Rainey's Book Talk, Lucky Leprechaun Bingo, Pie Fest, Eileen's Retirement Party, and Disco Bingo. Our senior centers and their activities currently remain open. To protect everyone, we have increased the frequency and rigor of cleanings, and hand sanitizer is available in all common areas. To help us continue to provide essential services to seniors, your donations are sincerely welcome.  A note from Tom and Nina: Dear Friends, Due to the uncertainty of the presence of covid-19 virus, the Olympia World Affairs Council has cancelled the March 19 talk on Ethiopia by Jeff Ried. When it is rescheduled we will notify you. We also believe it is the right to cancel the Ethiopia Education Fund fundraiser at Nina and Tom’s house Friday March 20. Although we were excited about both events we will have to gather at another time. We encourage you to go to the EEF website, ethiopianeducationfund.org to learn about the EEF program supporting education in rural Ethiopia. See our vibrant program and the successes from 10+ years of work. Watch the video, read student stories, and of course donate if you would like. This summer the annual EEF Fundraiser in Olympia will be doubly fun as we will be inviting the local chapter of Days For Girls to join us. DFG (daysforgirls.org) sews menstrual pad kits for girls like our Ethiopian students. Join us then to drink coffee AND participate in putting DFG kits together for world wide distribution and learn and support both programs. Nina Carter & Tom Rainey EEF board members, Stephanie Garlichs, Jeff Ried, Annie Clay  Every Wednesday at 1pm, until February 26th, at the Olympia Senior Center 222 Columbia Street NW Olympia.  The global geopolitics of the first half of the twenty-first century and beyond will very likely be dominated by the international dynamics between China, Russia, the United States, and perhaps India. Though European nations will no doubt still have an important geopolitical role to play in world affairs, the focus of world power is shifting from the Atlantic to the Pacific Rim.
Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin are currently authoritarian leaders of the two prevailing Eurasian and Asian superpowers—Russia and China. In this course, Tom will explore and compare the rise to power of these two world leaders as well as their domestic and foreign policies. Tom will focus on the strategic alliance between China and Russia and its global-geopolitical implications and consequences. He will talk about the emerging rivalry between the United States on the one hand, and China and Russia on the other, and its probable world-historical consequences. The media and format of the course will be PowerPoint presentations and a few suggested weekly readings of articles and chapters from relevant books. Participants will discuss the presentations, readings and films shown in class. |
